In May, 1822 Shelley’s new boat, the Don Juan, arrived at Lerici. ‘The Don Juan is arrived,’ Shelley tells Trelawny, ‘& nothing can exceed the admiration she has excited.’ But the excitement was tempered by the recent news that Byron’s and Claire Clairmont’s daughter, Allegra, had died. ‘Poor Clara has borne her loss with great fortitude, after the first shock’, Shelley writes, ‘& I am persuaded that she will be happier after than ever she could have been during the existence of a perpetual source of anxiety & suspense. I have only heard from Lord Byron once, & solely upon that subject.’
